Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Dr. John and this site is a reflection of my philosophy of life. I have been an endurance athlete for fifty years and a triathlete for thirty years. The lifestyle, the training, the racing, and the traveling give me great pleasure.
Presently, I am racing at the top of the 70 to 74 age group and I think “WOW! How fast life goes by!” I don’t know how many years I have left. That’s mostly out of control. What is within my control is how I chose to live each of them. For example, if I have only fifteen years remaining, I do not want to live one year fifteen times, I chose to live fifteen different years. This means engaging in a life that creates joy, love and fulfillment. For me, that means being with people of a like mind, challenging myself with endurance sports, and traveling and experiencing new destinations.
I completed my first marathon, The Marine Corps Marathon, in 1977. Then in 2003, I finished Ironman Lake Placid. I podiumed, 3rd place in my age group, at Half Ironman Austin (October 27, 2013).
In addition to being an endurance athlete, I have been a practicing psychologist since 1975 and hypnotherapist since 1992. I am also trained as a sports hypnotherapist.
I am not a physically gifted athlete. I’m not a tall, thin, strong man. My strength as an athlete is my winning mindset and the skill of tapping into my innermost resources.

HIMNC 70.3 was scheduled to be my epic race in 2020. It was cancelled, so now it’s my epic race in 2021. It is scheduled for October 23, 2021 in Wilmingto, NC.

The Gretna, VA 5 K, October 10, 2020 is my first race since the Jacksonville River Run 15 K last March. It will serve as a starting point baseline for my year of training for HIMNC.

The Dan River Ride, Danville, VA, October 3, 2020 is the longest I have ridden in about a year. There are three distances, 40, 60, and 100 miles. I am doing the short one.

CANCELLED DUE TO COVID 19.
Smith Mt. Lake Sprint Triathlon at Smith Mt. Lake State Park, VA. This one of my all-time favorite races that I have not done in forever, probably since 2014. We first did in the early 90s when it was an Olympic distance and held during the month of July. It’s an open water swim in a beautiful lake, water temps usually in the mid-70s. A rolling ride on very smooth roads. I’m psyched just writing about it.

CANCELLED DUE TO COVID 19.
Smithfield Sprint Triathlon. This is a great race with which to begin the triathlon season. It’s been a bunch of years since I have raced it and I wanted to begin my season with it. The race brings back really good memories – – it’s the first race I won my age group. In fact, I competed in year ten of the race and my overall time was the second fastest in that ten year history. Oh well, disappointed, but letting it go.

CANCELLED DUE TO COVID 19.
Shamrock Yuengling Half Marathon on March 22, 2020, in Virginia Beach. I completed the full marathon in 1978 and have done the half marathon a couple of times. Doing the full Shamrock might be overly optimistic for me this early in the year so I’m just doing the half. It’s a great race.

Jacksonville River Run 15 K is one of my favorite races. Its well organized and just a fun race.

The El Paso Half Marathon, February 16, 2020, is the first half of the full marathon. Typically, the weather is beautiful and well organized. For the finish, the runners enter and run the perimeter Southwest University Stadium.

Steelman Sprint Triathlon, August 18, 2019, Quakerstown, PA. This was a very challenging course which exacerbated by back pain. Last race or my triathlon season for 2019.
